It sounds like science fiction: While volunteers watched movie clips, a scanner watched their brains. And from their brain activity, a computer made rough reconstructions of what they viewed.

Scientists reported that result Thursday and speculated such an approach might be able to reveal dreams and hallucinations someday.

In the future, it might help stroke victims or others who have no other way to communicate, said Jack Gallant, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-author of the paper.

He believes such a technique could eventually reconstruct a dream or other made-up mental movie well enough to be recognizable. But the experiment dealt with scenes being viewed through the eyes at the time of scanning, and it's not clear how much of the approach would apply to scenes generated by the brain instead, he said.

People shouldn't be worried about others secretly eavesdropping on their thoughts in the near future, since the technique requires a person to spend long periods in an MRI machine, he noted.

Another expert said he expected any mind-reading capability would appear only far in the future.

For now, the reconstructed movie clips are only crude representations, loosely mimicking shapes and movement, but not nearly detailed enough to show that a blurry human-like figure represents the actor Steve Martin, for example.

The new work was published online Thursday by the journal Current Biology. It's a step beyond previous work that produced similar results with still images.

The paper reports results from the brain scans of three co-authors, who were chosen because the study subjects had to be motivated enough to lie motionless in an MRI machine for hours and stay alert as they stared at a tiny dot, Gallant said. The machine was used for a technique called functional MRI, or fMRI. Unlike ordinary MRI, which reveals anatomy, fMRI shows brain activity.

The first task was to teach the computer how different parts of each subject's brain responded to scenes of moving objects.

Participants stared at a dot to keep their eyes still as movie clips lasting 10 to 20 seconds unfolded in the background. That went on for two hours as the MRI machine tracked activity in their brains.

The study focused on parts of the brain that respond to simple features like shapes and movement, rather than other parts that identify objects. So it was limited to "only the most basic parts of vision," Gallant said.

Next, the question was: Could the computer use that brain activity information to reconstruct what appeared in the movie clips?

To test that, researchers fed the computer 18 million one-second YouTube clips that the participants had never seen. They asked the computer to predict what brain activity each of those clips would evoke.

Then they asked it to reconstruct the movie clips using the best matches it could find between the YouTube scenes and the participants' brain activity.

The reconstructions are blends of the YouTube snippets, which makes them blurry. Some are better than others. If a human appeared in the original clip, a human form generally showed up in the reconstruction. But one clip that showed elephants walking left to right led to a reconstruction that looked like "a shambling mound," Gallant said. The YouTube clips hadn't shown elephants and so "we just had to make do with what we had."

The quality could be improved by better techniques to blend human forms, as well as a bigger storehouse of moving images, he said.

Still, the overall results are "one of the most impressive demonstrations of the scientific knowledge of how the visual system works," said Marcel Just, director of the Center for Cognitive Brain Imaging at Carnegie Mellon University.

"I'd give 50 or 100 dollars to see dreams of mine with that (current level of) quality," said Just, who didn't participate in the new study.

Perhaps the technique could be used someday to provide helpful brain stimulation to people who have trouble processing visual information, he said.

Michael Tarr, co-director of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, a joint venture of Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, called the work a "cool demonstration" of how scientists can use fMRI to study the brain.

"I don't think people should interpret this as a precursor to mind-reading," said Tarr, who didn't participate in the work. "The level of knowledge we'd have to have about the brain before we could even think about seeing whether mind-reading would work is decades, if not centuries, away."

Federally funded research at the University of Illinois has produced a microchip that can be put on skin like a temporary tattoo and is successful in linking the physical world and the cyberworld in stunning new ways, according to a university announcement.

"We think this could be an important conceptual advance in wearable electronics, to achieve something that is almost unnoticeable to the wearer," said university electrical and computer engineering professor Todd Coleman.

Coleman helped lead the multi-disciplinary team that worked on the project that is being touted for its uses in medical monitoring as well as treatment of disorders that require links to computers.

"The researchers found that, when applied to the skin of the throat, the sensors could distinguish muscle movement for simple speech," the university report said. "The researchers have even used the electronic patches to control a video game, demonstrating the potential for human-computer interfacing."

Coleman said the technology "can connect you to the physical world and the cyberworld in a very natural way that feels very comfortable."

The development recalls a recent WND reportabout the area of study called"transhumanism,"a term often used synonymously with "human enhancement."

Basically, it's a sort of regenesis, altering human bodies – genetically, mechanically or both – to make them better than they've been for thousands of years, affording them Superman-style abilities in both brains and brawn.

Futurists describe it as being "posthuman," the next step in what they believe to be the evolutionary process.

According to the University of Illinois, "Skin-mounted electronics have many biomedical applications, including EEG and EMG sensors to monitor nerve and muscle activity. One major advantage of skin-like circuits is that they don't require conductive gel, tape, skin-penetrating pins or bulky wires, which can be uncomfortable for the user and limit coupling efficiency. They are much more comfortable and less cumbersome than traditional electrodes and give the wearers complete freedom of movement."

The report said the technology will allow a more accurate understanding of how the human brain functions.

"If we want to understand brain function in a natural environment, that's completely incompatible with EEG studies in a laboratory," said Coleman, who has since moved to the University of California at San Diego. "The best way to do this is to record neural signals in natural settings, with devices that are invisible to the user."

The report said the skin-mounted electronics also could be used for patients with neurological disorders, connecting them to computers.

The research was discussed in the Aug. 12 issue of the journal Science.

The new product is a circuit that bends, wrinkles and stretches with the skin, yet maintains the full functions of the sensors, LEDs, transistors, radio frequency capacitors, antennas and other components.

"We threw everything in our bag of tricks onto that platform, and then added a few other new ideas on top of those, to show that we could make it work," Rogers said in the university report.

The chips are applied in a method similar to affixing a temporary tattoo.

Rogers collaborated with Northwestern University engineering professor Yonggang Huang to develop what they call filamentary serpentine, in which circuits are made up of squiggled wires. The circuits are mounted on a flexible surface.

"The blurring of electronics and biology is really the key point here," Huang said in the report. "All established forms of electronics are hard, rigid. Biology is soft, elastic. It's two different worlds. This is a way to truly integrate them."

The scientists' next goals, they said, are to integrate various electronics into a system and add Wi-Fi capability.

"The vision is to exploit these concepts in systems that have self-contained, integrated functionality, perhaps ultimately working in a therapeutic fashion with closed feedback control based on integrated sensors, in a coordinated manner with the body itself," Rogers said.

Cornell University researchers have succeeded in implanting electronic circuit probes into tobacco hornworms as early pupae. The hornworms pass through the chrysalis stage to mature into moths whose muscles can be controlled with the implanted electronics.

Imagine tapping into the mind of a coma patient, or watching one's own dream on YouTube. With a cutting-edge blend of brain imaging and computer simulation, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, are bringing these futuristic scenarios within reach.

Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people's dynamic visual experiences – in this case, watching Hollywood movie trailers. As yet, the technology can only reconstruct movie clips people have already viewed. However, the breakthrough paves the way for reproducing the movies inside our heads that no one else sees, such as dreams and memories, according to researchers.

"This is a major leap toward reconstructing internal imagery," said Professor Jack Gallant, a UC Berkeley neuroscientist and coauthor of the study to be published online Sept. 22 in the journal Current Biology. "We are opening a window into the movies in our minds."

Eventually, practical applications of the technology could include a better understanding of what goes on in the minds of people who cannot communicate verbally, such as stroke victims, coma patients and people with neurodegenerative diseases.

Mind-reading through brain imaging technology is a common sci-fi theme … Reconstructing movies using brain scans has been challenging because the blood flow signals measured using fMRI change much more slowly than the neural signals that encode dynamic information in movies, researchers said. For this reason, most previous attempts to decode brain activity have focused on static images. "We need to know how the brain works in naturalistic conditions," he said. "For that, we need to first understand how the brain works while we are watching movies."

A US biotech company said Thursday it will soon begin the first-ever European trials using human embryonic stem cells in an experimental treatment for people with a form of juvenile blindness.

The Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology said the trials will involve 12 patients with Stargardt's disease and will be based at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, with more European sites planned for the future.

"This is the first time an embryonic stem cell trial has ever been approved anywhere else in the world," said Bob Lanza, chief scientific officer at ACT and a longtime researcher in human embryonic stem cells.

The clearance to begin the European trials came from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and the Gene Therapy Advisory Committee, ACT said.

The same company became the first to launch a US trial of embryonic stem cells to treat Stargardt's disease in November 2010, followed in January by a second trial of the method in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration.

So far, only two US patients have been treated as part of those early trials which are mainly aimed at seeing if the treatment is safe before moving on to measure if or how well it works.

"We're very pleased with the results so far. We're in the process of scheduling the next two patients for each of the two (US) trials," Lanza told AFP.

The use of human embryonic stem cells, which can become any cell in the body, has been touted by researchers as wielding great regenerative potential against a host of disorders, from spinal cord injuries to Parkinson's disease, blindness and diabetes.

However, the technology has raised objections by conservative and religious opponents who say it should be banned because the cells' extraction involves the destruction of a human embryo.

Former president George W. Bush had blocked government funding for human embryonic stem cell research on new cell lines, citing religious grounds, a ban which President Barack Obama lifted in 2009.

A lengthy legal battle ensued, and in July a US federal judge finally dismissed a lawsuit that had temporarily blocked government funding for the research.

The move was hailed by the National Institutes of Health, which allocated about $40 million to human embryonic stem cell research in 2010 and has set aside $125 million this year -- a tiny fraction of its $31 billion budget.

As private companies, ACT and Geron, which last year began a US trial using the cells to treat paralysis, have been able to avoid much of the controversy by securing their own funding for the early trials, as well as by meeting stringent government regulations.

Another major concern about the research is the possibility that the stem cells could form into tumors, but ACT said it has seen no evidence of that in its trials so far.

ACT's method involves using human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, or the pigmented layer of the retina.

The cells are injected into the eye of a patient whose RPE cells have broken down.

Patients with Stargardt's disease, formally known as Stargardt's Macular dystrophy, often experience blurry vision, difficulty seeing in low-light and eventually most lose their ability to see at all.

The disease can be inherited by a child when two parents carry the gene mutation that causes it. There is no cure.

The treatment process being tested by ACT worked in animals by creating an abundance of new RPE cells.

Tests on rats have shown 100 percent improvement in visual performance and "near-normal function" was also achieved in mice, both without negative side effects, ACT said.

Between 80,000 and 100,000 people in the United States and Europe are estimated to suffer from Stargardt's, which is one of the most common forms of juvenile blindness in the world and can take root as early as age six.

If the treatment is proven to work in humans, ACT believes it could extend to a much wider market.

That could include other degenerative diseases of the retina such as macular degeneration, which affects as many as 30 million people in the US and Europe and "represents a $25-30 billion worldwide market that has yet to be effectively addressed," the company said in a statement.

The demonstration laid the groundwork for scientific advances that would allow drones to search for a human target and then make an identification based on facial-recognition or other software. Once a match was made, a drone could launch a missile to kill the target. Military systems with some degree of autonomy — such as robotic, weaponized sentries — have been deployed in the demilitarized zone between South and North Korea and other potential battle areas. Researchers are uncertain how soon machines capable of collaborating and adapting intelligently in battlefield conditions will come online. It could take one or two decades, or longer. The U.S. military is funding numerous research projects on autonomy to develop machines that will perform some dull or dangerous tasks and to maintain its advantage over potential adversaries who are also working on such systems. The prospect of machines able to perceive, reason and act in unscripted environments presents a challenge to the current understanding of international humanitarian law. The Geneva Conventions require belligerents to use discrimination and proportionality, standards that would demand that machines distinguish among enemy combatants, surrendering troops and civilians. The U.S. military has begun to grapple with the implications of emerging technologies. –WP

This strange sound phenomenon is being reported more and more frequently from diverse places on the globe, and sometimes just preceding earthquakes. And not just by a few individuals, but by stadiums of people and even whole cities.
The day before the big Northeast quake in the US the weird sound was heard during a baseball game and caught on TV. (see below). It's also been reported in Russia, Canada, also preceding an earthquake, and other locations.

What Is It?

Let's do a little dot connecting. And by the way, if you're one of those waiting for some government scientist or official to come out with the real story on this and the whole gammut of weird stuff going on you're living in a dream world.
It ain't gonna happen.
What we can do is look at the events themselves, compile what information we can, and put some ideas out there for discussion. I don't pretend to fully understand anything, but I'm very eager to point out what appear to be "anomalies" and patterns happening in our world that seem to have serious significance.
And as many have found out, when you're sincere and open and are passionate about your research and finding real truth, it usually paints a pretty clear picture!
(BTW, this is a bit of a video fest which I rarely do, but they're all very short except the first one, but it's a compilation and sets the stage quite well IMO.)

The HAARP Discussion

As a little aside to start, I'm a little concerned at what's becoming a knee-jerk reaction by the so-called alternative community at the mention of HAARP anymore--that it's overkill and bordering paranoid to always bring it up. Obviously not everything is attributable to HAARP technology, but can you blame anyone for not first looking at how some event was possibly caused or exacerbated by these evil elite PTBs or whomever?
That's completely healthy and understandable. I say let people react as they will and if you must, answer with facts and with respect. When we start broad-brushing or judging and excluding each other based on one point, article or post it's not a good sign.
Are we becoming our own truth Gestapo?  Beware of anyone trying to stir things up and turn us on each other.
That's a sure way to eat ourselves, as the old symbol goes...

Call it HAARP or whatever...

Back to business: We don't even KNOW all the stuff these megalomaniacs have.
But I'm more inclined to believe this strange sound phenomenon is artificially induced by the world's mad scientists at these HAARP type facilities or some such vibrational tool, and that it's these insane boys playing with their toys and seeing what they can produce. And it's definitely not healthy.
But who knows what dastardly advances they've made that we have absolutely no knowledge of?
The monstrous CERN particle accelerator in Switzerland is enough to freak anyone out with its capability to literally implode the planet or open a portal to another dimension allowing who knows what to enter ours. These facts have been stated openly by their head researchers!...yet no one gets the significance and goes back to watching the ball game. Surreal.

The Woodpecker Phenomenon

We know as far back as the 70's Russian electromagnetic pulse technology was causing a woodpecker type effect that was broadcast to the United States.
And they were even then concerned about the effect on the human brain. Imagine now, folks.

You can only imagine what this now super advanced ionospheric heating device and other technologies are capable of doing.

Examples of the "Strange Sound"

We do know it is very strange, and thanks to youtube it's very well documented.

Here's one compilation of a few events:

(Below) In the US this event recently took place...of course explained away as PA system feedback. As you'll see it's the same sound you just heard above...where there was no stadium, and no PA system...AND on the eve of the Northeast Earthquake!

(Below) Here's another example. This strange sound is like the event at the baseball game and some of the other clips.

Another example, this time a little different high-pitched sound following a heavy chemtrail day with chemtrail rainbow--and 11 hours later the area was also hit with a 5.0 earthquake!

You can find more examples of this on the internet. It's definitely something to keep an eye on.

Conclusion

The fact is, at this point we don't seem to know what's causing this phenomenon for sure. That it's in keeping with the potential of HAARP or EISCAT and similar Orwellian technologies is a fact. This we know just from the amount of disclosed information on the potential of these facilities admitted in the public domain and available via amassed amounts of patent documents.
That it can be the earth going through deep tectonic shifts as the magma moves according to the changes in our magnetosphere, or from the gravitational effects of changes in our solar system and beyond?
Very possible.

That mad scientists directed by the PTBs would screw with the magnetosphere and ionosphere to control the weather and planetary changes, either experimentally or with specific intent?
Also very possible.
Put 'em together in various mixes and that could be what we're experiencing. Some natural changes due to cosmic alignments, the solar cycle, changes in the earth's magnetic pole and geothermal make up...and
Whack-job power freaks utilizing their fabricated forces in an attempt to co-opt nature for their own intentions.

Worse Yet - Mind Control?

Are these audible ranges we're picking up at times symptoms of mind-altering frequencies as referred to in the first video above? This is the most nefarious of the PTBs' arsenal of societal manipulation and incarceration: Mind Control.
This too has been documented as a definite potential use by electromagnetic broadcasting devices, HAARP and otherwise. The network of GWEN towers and cell masts is vast, and is believed to be now in use for just such purposes, as well as weather alteration and who knows what else.
But as the scientist said in the first video from the 70's mind you, he believed they were using the frequency to "pacify".
Now combine the electronic pulses with the fluoridated water, altered food and chemtrailed air. Think that might explain the absolute blindness of most of the world's population and why everyone just rolls over as they're being raped economically, politically, socially and literally? How DID they get away with something as blatant as 9/11? Making sense?
Lotta dots line up on that one. And if they don't for you, you need to dig deeper, cuz you're missing some serious pieces of the puzzle.
Whichever, we are definitely dealing with a rapidly changing earth environment, and seriously perverted entities in high places that are not helping, but seriously damaging ourselves, our environment and our home.

What we think we know today can be radically altered by what we discover tomorrow. More than ever we need to stay open and alert. We're each literally feeling our way through this maze and slowly finding out what is real and what is false.
If our perspective isn't constantly changing and growing like the Universe, we're stalled out and very likely getting discouraged, dogmatic, stubborn and fearful. When we're on the right track we are happy, optimistic, loving and communicative, even in the face of the most horrible truths.
